When You Touch Trash, You Smell Like Trash: Protecting Your Energy in Business and Life

Learn why working with unethical people contaminates your peace, and how protecting your energy is the ultimate form of success and integrity.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the energy of the people I work with matters more than the size of the deal.

I won’t do business with people who lie, cheat, manipulate, or take advantage of others. I also won’t take on projects financed with dirty money or unethical intentions. The most common example I see is when someone’s parent made their fortune in a dishonest way, and even though their child is now the investor or founder, the same bad energy still controls the purse strings.

When I work with people who operate with a clean conscience, the entire experience feels lighter. Conversations flow, results come naturally, and I sleep well at night. But when I’ve ignored my gut and worked with unethical people, I’ve paid for it: in my sleep, my mood, and my peace of mind.

If someone’s intentions are immoral or self-serving, it doesn’t matter how much profit is on the table. When you touch trash, you smell like trash.

I’ve had family members use me financially, business partners take advantage of trust, and clients who believed their money entitled them to disrespect. Every single time, walking away protected not just my reputation but my spirit.

These days, I’m very clear about who I work with. I choose people whose integrity matches mine, people who can sleep well at night because they did the right thing. People who want to win, but not at someone else’s expense.

Energy is contagious. Protect yours like it’s oxygen.
